Chapter 19

Amelia stiffened when she saw him.

“What are you doin’, lolly-gaggin’ way back here?” Jude demanded.

“We’re talking,” Amelia shot back. “Is that all right with you? You don’t disapprove, do you?”

Jude’s head spun around to scowl at her, but Bruce answered. “I just wanted to ride up to that hilltop over there to get a look at the land. Amelia was just explaining some of the ranch operation to me.”

“She’s not fillin’ your head full of all her wild ideas about how her and her sisters run the ranch, is she?” Jude replied. “I was lookin’ forward to having another man around. Maybe you and I can put our heads together on how to turn this ranch into a little more respectable operation.”

“From what Amelia told me,” Bruce returned, “it sounds like she and her sisters have the place pretty well in hand. After all, they ran the place by themselves for five years before you came along. They must have been doing pretty well on their own.”

“They may have kept the place going,” Jude admitted, “but the whole ship could be a sight better than it is. You’ll see when you get out there.”

“I’m inclined to let it keep going the way it has been,” Bruce returned. “If it ain’t broke, there’s no need to fix it. If what the sisters are doing works, why change it?”

“To make it into a respectable cattle ranch. That’s why,” Jude shot back. “Surely you don’t intend to give over the decisions to a bunch of women, do you?” He glanced at Amelia. “I mean, not when there are the two of us around to whip the place into shape.”

“I don’t intend to give over the decisions to anyone,” Bruce replied. “The last time I checked, the ranch belongs to the Goodkind family. If they want me to take over from them, I will. But the decisions aren’t mine to give over. Anyway, I don’t think Amelia and Allegra have any plans to step down.” He turned and asked over his shoulder, “Do you?”

“No,” she replied. “I know Allegra plans to work the ranch as long as she lives.”

“What about you?” Jude asked. “Have you made up your mind about what you’re going to do?”

“No, I haven’t,” Amelia replied. “But as I understand it, I don’t have to choose one or the other. I don’t have to give up working the ranch to be a wife and a mother.”

Jude’s mouth fell open. “Are you serious? Are you tellin’ me that Alma could work the ranch in the condition she’s in? You’re nuts!”

Amelia didn’t turn a hair. “Sure, I might have to stop riding if I get too big in the belly to ride a horse. But once that’s out of the way, I can go back to working the ranch if I want to. Either way, no matter what I decide to do, I’ll have to keep riding for the next several months just to show Bruce the ropes. It’s gonna be a while before he’s ready to take over for me.
